In the Eighties, Peugeot bore its teeth and decided to spruce up the 309 series by applying the knowledge it had gained from the success of the 205 GTI. The undercarriage of the latter would be introduced to the 309, as well as the 1,9L engine along with the gearbox and brakes system. It is however a distinctive model thanks to various elements of the bodywork unique to the car, 15" rims, a new front bumper, additional headlights, and a rear spoiler. The 309 GTI would make a reputation for itself thanks to the quality of its handling that was nothing less than what could be expected from the manufacturer.
