At the end of 1986, the Group B was shelved by the FIA, considered too dangerous. Many builders therefore found themselves with museum pieces on their hands. But at Peugeot, there was a brilliant idea to continue the success story of the 205 T16: by making it participate in the next Paris-Dakar! This was quite a challenge, to transform a rally car into a rally-raid car in a few months. Peugeot even drew from its drivers for the World Rally Championship for its Dakar adventure. Thus, Ari Vatanen (N ° 205), Shekhar Mehta (N ° 206) and Andrea Zanussi (N ° 207) were launched into the middle of the desert. And, once again, success was awaiting the lion! For his first Paris-Dakar, Ari Vatanen made the 205 T16 triumph in its Grand Raid version. The flying Finn, back in competition after his serious accident in 1985, had lost none of his steering. The Dakar legend was born.
